USCar Trader import service

Import this model from the USA or Canada

Choose a specific vehicle. Where data is available, its detail page shows the import cost calculation. We assess any possible duty benefit with you before purchase.

Important: A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact us before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support through the process. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

Land Rover Discovery

The full-size Land Rover Discovery has always been the practical, seven-seat sibling in the range — less flash than a Range Rover, but arguably the more usable family workhorse.

Model profile

Model history and generations

Importing a used Land Rover Discovery from the USA

One point to settle up front: the Discovery is built in Solihull (England) and, since 2018/2019, in Nitra (Slovakia).

Generations at a glance

Naming has been confusing in the US, so it helps to be precise.

Powertrain and equipment

Engines, drivetrain and trims

Powertrain lineup

US-market Discovery 5 buyers had a clear split. The petrol option was the 3.0-litre supercharged V6 (around 340 hp), a strong, refined unit shared across the Jaguar Land Rover range.

Trims in the US market

The Discovery is offered only as a five-door, five- or seven-seat SUV. US trim ladders have run through S, SE, HSE and HSE Luxury, with special editions such as the Landmark and various "Metropolitan" packages.

Vehicle selection

North American market and suitability

The used market stateside

Discovery 5 cars from 2017–2020 are now firmly in the used bracket, typically showing 60,000 to 150,000 km, while LR3/LR4 examples are older and cheaper but need closer scrutiny.

Who should import one

A US import makes most sense if you want a specific engine-and-trim combination that is thin on the ground locally, if you value the drier, less corroded southern-state cars, or if you simply want more choice at a given age and mileage.

Pre-purchase review

Model-specific inspection points

Inspection plan for this model

For the Land Rover Discovery, the agreed inspection plan focuses in particular on a cold start only where access is authorised, visible leaks, maintenance records and exhaust-aftertreatment components. USCar Trader can document these points through a separately commissioned on-site inspection; inaccessible areas or unauthorised road tests are explicitly recorded as unchecked.

Germany and Europe

Differences, adaptation and registration

What US models do differently

Mechanically the cars are close, but US examples run amber front indicators and US-spec headlamps, lack the rear fog lamp Germany requires, and use a speedometer with miles dominant.

German TÜV and registration

Typical work before or during TÜV/individual approval includes fitting a rear fog lamp, converting or coding the lighting to European standard (amber-to-red rear function, headlamp compliance), confirming the speedometer shows km/h, and a documented odometer reading in kilometres.

USCar Trader services

Inspection, purchase processing and escrow

As a buyer based in Germany, you do not have to inspect the vehicle yourself in the United States or Canada. Within the agreed scope, USCar Trader can coordinate document review, a separately commissioned on-site inspection and purchase processing.

  • Vehicle profile and history: The profile can show the VIN, US title status and available history records. No data source guarantees that every earlier event was reported.
  • Optional CARFAX report: Additional reported maintenance or service entries can be included. The report is not a complete service book or proof of every interval.
  • On-site inspection / USCT AutoCheck: USCar Trader can arrange a separately booked vehicle inspection. Agreed visible and accessible areas are documented. Road or functional tests require suitable access and seller approval; the visual review is not a lift inspection or workshop diagnosis.
  • Purchase processing and escrow: After approval, USCar Trader can coordinate seller contact, negotiation, contract and the escrow and import service. Fees, payment route and responsibilities are recorded in advance.
  • Recalls: Open safety recalls can be checked by VIN through the NHTSA recall search; they do not describe overall condition.

Covered inspection points are agreed in advance. An on-site inspection records condition at the appointment and is not a guarantee.

Next step: Before commissioning, USCar Trader and the customer agree which document, history, inspection and transaction checks suit the vehicle and are included in the service. This records what was actually checked.

Questions and answers

Common questions about importing this model

Is a used Land Rover Discovery reliable enough to import?

It can be, provided you buy on history. The air suspension and, on some engines, timing and pump components are the known weak points, so a documented, well-maintained car is worth paying for.

Does this vehicle automatically qualify for a 0% import-duty rate?

No, not automatically. A 0% EU import-duty rate may be available for a vehicle covered by Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 that has US origin and is imported directly into the EU. CETA may apply to a vehicle with preferential Canadian origin. Whether the requirements are met is assessed for the individual case. Please contact USCar Trader before purchase; we review the possible duty benefit and provide non-binding support. Import VAT and other costs are assessed separately.

What is the difference between the LR4 and the Discovery 5?

The LR4 (2010–2016) is the older, boxier body-on-frame design; the Discovery 5 (2017+) is a lighter aluminium monocoque with a smoother shape and newer engines.

Should I choose the Td6 diesel or the supercharged V6?

The Td6 is the towing and long-distance choice with strong torque and economy; the supercharged V6 is smoother and simpler but thirstier. The diesel is rarer used.

How long does importing a Discovery from the USA take?

Typically several weeks: ocean freight alone is usually two to five weeks, plus port handling, customs clearance and TÜV/registration in Germany.

Will the American lighting pass TÜV?

After adding a rear fog lamp and converting the lighting to European standard, yes — this is routine work handled during individual approval.

Can I import an LR3/LR4 as well?

Yes, though older cars need closer inspection of the air suspension, differentials and rust. Buy on condition and documentation.

Does USCar Trader sell the car to me?

No. We act only as an independent broker and intermediary for used vehicles; we do not hold stock or add a vehicle margin.
